Proofreading involves checking for grammatical mistakes, spelling errors and typos, and it’s usually performed once a manuscript has been Copy Edited. The proofread tackles the bare bones of the sentence – the use of capitals, dashes, commas, apostrophes, exclamation marks and full stops, and whether, for instance, it should be practice or practise, lie or lay, affect or effect, and so on.
While I usually recommend that authors book a Copy Edit and Proofread Package, if their manuscript is already in really good shape, it’s possible for me to do a Proofread with a Light Copy Edit in one go. This can only be done when the manuscript requires gentle tweaks rather than major sentence restructuring and rewriting.

A note on how I work
Some authors are happy for me to input the changes as I go, while others wish to see and approve every alteration. For the latter, I use Word’s Track Changes feature. Below is an example of a manuscript I proofread for Chris Bale, who also opted for the additional light copy edit. Chris wrote a biography about his maternal grandfather, Alexander Butler, an acclaimed preacher, which he wanted to self-publish and share with his large extended family.

Your Copy, Professionally Edited
To determine the level of editing your manuscript requires, please submit a sample of your manuscript (the first chapter or around 2,000 words), plus the full word count, for an initial assessment. As part of the assessment, I will provide a free sample edit so you can verify the quality of my work. This will also help me to determine the level of editing required and provide you with a quote.
