Prices for Self-Publishing Editing

Proofreading: From £8.15 per 1000 words

Ideal for: Authors who are happy with their manuscript but would like it checked for errors in punctuation, grammar and spelling.

Copy editing: From £13.15 per 1000 words

Ideal for: Authors who have finished their manuscript but would like it to undergo a professional polish. The editor will make improvements to sentence structure and copy flow, check for inconsistencies and repetition and perform basic fact-checking.

Note: This is a first-round edit. Although we will correct grammar and spelling errors as we go, the main point of the copy edit is to look at sentence structure and flow, so typos will often slip through the net. In addition, once the copy edit has been completed, the manuscript will be sent back to the author for additional work. It is therefore highly recommended that you use this service in conjunction with at least one proofread. Our Copy Edit and Proofread Package currently includes a free further ‘peace of mind’ proof by another editor.

Manuscript Assessment: From £5 per 1000 words

Ideal for: Authors who have finished their manuscript but are aware that it needs further work and require professional feedback prior to copy editing. The editor will read through the manuscript, examining its overall tone, structure and readability. They will make suggestions on parts that need to be extensively rewritten, developed or researched. For novels, this also includes characterisation, themes and plot. According to preference, the advice will be given in writing and/or over the phone. The manuscript will be copy edited once the author and editor are happy with the changes made.

Publishing Packages: From £1,625 (up to 20,000 words)

Ideal for: Authors who would like a professional to take their book from draft to publication, with other tasks such as Typesetting, Cover Design and Distribution all taken care of for them.

When you reach the stage of having a publication-ready book, it can feel like the hardest step is still to come and you might not know where to start. Our publishing services are designed to take the headache out of self-publishing. We’ll work together to create a professional, polished book via a series of structured steps. As well as a high level of editing, both our Standard and Ultimate packages include Cover Design, Typesetting (eBook and print), book registration and Amazon account set-up. We’ll also provide you with a Publishing Schedule and publishing date. Take a look at our Waterstones page to view the other books published by Wrate’s Publishing. You can also download my free Self-Publishing Guide, which goes through all the steps to publication and includes a handy glossary of self-publishing terms.

Final ‘peace of mind’ proofread: £3.50 per 1000 words

No editor can guarantee that a manuscript will be returned to the author mistake-free (as much as we’d like to). Traditionally published books are edited numerous times and small errors can still crop up in the final print. We always recommend that authors carefully read through their book before publishing, even after the proofread has been completed. If you’d rather let someone else handle this task then we will hand your manuscript to an outside editor for a final careful read through.

Note: Authors who book a Copy Edit and Proofread package will receive a ‘peace of mind’ proof for no extra charge.

Not sure which service you need? Then send the first chapter of your novel or non-fiction book to, or fill in our Free Sample Edit for a no-obligation appraisal of your work. Even if you haven’t yet finished your book, we will be happy to discuss offering our editing expertise ‘as-you-go’.

Danielle is a delight to work with, she was invested in my work and always had the final product in the forefront of her mind. Importantly, she ensured it worthy of being in the public domain. With a keen eye for detail and a professional … More approach she offers a quality service; I frequently find myself recommending her and will continue to do so. What are you waiting for :-D
Merry Go Round was published under my real name, Sarah Toll, by Wrate's Editing Services in November 2020.

I found Danielle about 10 yrs ago I think, when I had the urge to write a novel, its now sitting in a dust pile but the experience was so good I decided to try again with a non fiction book about my experiences as a nanny and how to help … More new mothers. Danielle sifted through screeds of thoughts and rambling sentences and pulled out some thing that made me feel like I knew what I was talking about. But it was missing something on my part, and sat on the study computer till I became a mum myself and was able to bring both sides of childcare to the table, the professional and the novice ! Hence All The Small Things, Everything I picked up as a Nanny and a New Mummy was born ( pun intended ) Between us we filtered through blogs I had written and previous work and brought together a piece of work Im really proud of .
Danielle found my voice, helped me say what I needed to say, and is still supporting me and helping me with wonderful press on the book, so far I've been in the paper and on the radio promoting it .... with a few more deals up her sleeve to make sure that our work gets to as many Mums as it can.
I cant recommend this process enough, and the feeling of achievement when you have the book inside you on paper. Danielle is professional and personal , which is what us budding authors need. If youre looking to tell your story , look no further .

I contacted Danielle Wrate by email about a proofread of my novel, Shadow Song. I was impressed by her swift and thorough response, checking that this was indeed the service I needed. The proofread was duly carried out, well within the … More estimated time. I am extremely pleased with it, as it has been carried out carefully and the comments made are constructive and helpful. Thank you.

I am so glad I chose Danielle to edit my first novel. It was frightening to hand something I'd worked on so hard and for so long to a stranger, but, from the outset, she was supportive and offered constructive advice. I couldn't … More be more pleased with the work she did for me and will certainly be using her again for book number two.
